Gold Miners' Daughters
The Gold Miners’ Daughters (GMDs) is the Roller Derby team in Timmins, Ontario and we are proud to be a part of Northern Ontario Roller Derby (NORD). NORD is an association with leagues from Northern Ontario communities: Cochrane, Kirkland Lake, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Temiskaming, and Timmins. Each community makes up a Chapter League in the Assoication which has their own local teams, events, fundraising and training.
Being a part of an assoication like NORD, allows our smaller communities the opportunity to foster the growth and sustainability of the sport of roller derby in Northern Ontario, inclusive to all genders, through the delivery of quality training, opportunity, recreational and competitive play, and a healthy lifestyle.
The home teams from each Chapter play against one another throughout the spring-summer derby season and will eventually come head to head in an end of season playoff tournament, set to start in 2016. Along with our home teams some Chapters have competitive teams that travel to find fierce competition.
Each year there are tryouts to make the NORD regional competitive travel team called the NORDstarz!! The NORDstarz are made up of the skaters from the region who have passed a higher level of minimums and strive for more competitive derby outside of Northern Ontario and beyond. We also have a regional fresh team called the NEOfights who compete each year in Toronto’s Fresh and Furious Tournament. There is also a regional mens team called the NORDpoles who are just getting their poles in order and are playing full bouts in 2016.
